War Rugs. Textile collage. 110 x 110 cm. 2022.
The series of War Rugs are dedicated to war in Ukraine. The flowers in “Why war?” rug are associated with grief and graves of killed civilians and children. “My Ukraine in Flame” refers to Oleksandr Dovzhenko’s novel “Ukraine in Flame” of 1943, drawing a parallel with the Ukrainian experience of WW2. “A cuckoo flew through my house” draws upon a Ukrainian folk song about a cuckoo flying through the house, symbolizing mother. In my rug, the injured cuckoo-mother represents Motherland with an open wound.
